I wanted this to be a lazy dinner with maximum flavor. With just 10 ingredients that come together in one pot, I've kept the sauce super simple so the salmon stays the star with fresh dill and a squeeze of lemon to keep the flavors fresh and interesting.
Salmon is one of my favorite fish. It's tasty, nutritious, and incredibly versatile. It pairs beautifully with so many flavors, but there's something about the combination of rich salmon, soft gnocchi, and a silky dill cream sauce that's sure to land this recipe in your regular rotation.

Helen's testing notes
I wanted this salmon gnocchi to be creamy and comforting without being too heavy, and with a short ingredient list. Dill brings a fresh, herbaceous taste, and a squeeze of lemon balances the richness with brightness and acidity.

Ingredients:
- Gnocchi. See below.
- Salmon. Can be farmed or wild.
- Heavy cream. Key ingredient in the sauce.
- Chicken stock.
- Fresh dill. Adds a fresh herbaceous taste.
- Parmesan. For a touch of umami
- Lemon juice & zest. Added at the end to bring freshness and acidity.
Star ingredient: Gnocchi
Gnocchi are small, soft Italian dumplings traditionally made from potato. Ready in minutes, they can be simmered or pan-fried and they soak up sauces nicely.
- What to buy: Most of the fresh store-bought gnocchi tastes good, but DeCecco is my favorite.
- Make your own gnocchi. More of a weekend project, but if you have the time it's worth it, and it freezes well too.
- Best substitutes: Short pasta like fusilli, penne, or rigatoni.
Recipe steps
*Please read the recipe card below for full ingredients and instructions.*

Step 1: Cook the gnocchi according to package directions. Pan-fry the salmon for 2-3 minutes per side, until cooked through.

Step 2: Fry the garlic, add the chicken stock,

Step 3: Stir in the cream and add the Parmesan and dill.

Step 4: Stir in the gnocchi and salmon. Remove from the heat and add lemon juice and zest
Recipe Tips
- Try to avoid overcooking the salmon during pan-frying or by leaving it to simmer in the sauce for too long. It should be juicy and buttery, and added when the sauce is ready, just before serving.
- Add the lemon off the heat. Stirring in the lemon juice and zest at the very end keeps the flavor bright and fresh.
Serving suggestions
I love adding a side of simple green veg like peas, broccoli, or green beans. A glass of white wine and a chunk of crusty bread on the side for mopping up any leftover sauce also rounds off the meal nicely.

Recipe FAQs
You can, just skip the pan-frying stage and add it at the end at the same time as you add the cooked gnocchi.
A frying pan or cast-iron casserole dish are both good options.
Salmon Gnocchi tastes best when cooked fresh but can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days and reheated on the stove or in the microwave. Feel free to add a splash of water if needed.
